What are mold bombs, ULV, and thermal fogging?

There are three types of mold foggers – one releases fog from an aerosol can (mold bomb fogger) and the other from a small machine – ULV cold foggers and thermal foggers. They all do the same thing, which is release atomized particles into the air that kills bacteria, viruses, mold, and spores from surface areas and the air, while some even deodorize to get rid of any unpleasant mold and mildew smells.

How do they work?

They contain a mold fogging solution in liquid form. It releases it as a fog (atomized particles measured microns in size) into the air.

The particles spread throughout the room and cover all surface areas and walls. Also, when in in the air they attach themselves to mold spores, mycotoxins, bacteria, and other allergy causing particles, kills them and then weighs them down to the ground and onto surface areas. These particles can reach even the most hard-to-reach places and kills all mold upon contact.

Also, the smaller the atomized particles in the fog are, the more effective it will be.

In this article we won’t be covering thermal fogging, because it’s not as DIY friendly as the ULV and aerosol can methods – mainly because it uses a lot of heat to create atomized particles and it can therefore be a fire hazard.

Why use a mold fogger?

Mold Bomb Foggers... Do They Really Work? - BlackMoldFix (2)

It kills mold spores: Once mold starts growing in your home, it will begin spreading quickly by releasing spores into the air that colonizes other areas. The chemicals that a mold bomb fogger releases kill these spores, which stops further colonization.

It kills mold in hard-to-reach places: Mold hates the light and thus usually thrives in dark areas that are out of sight and hard to reach. Crawl spaces, the inside of air conditioners, and attics are just a few examples of such places.

It’s an excellent preventative measure: You don’t always have to wait for mold to appear before taking action, because setting off a mold bomb fogger in high-risk parts of your home on occasion is a great preventative measure.

It sanitizes and disinfects: The chemicals contained in these products kill so much more than just mold and mildew. It kills up to 99% of all bacteria and viruses such as covid-19, herpes, H1N1 influenza, HIV, and so much more.

How to use a mold bomb fogger safely and correctly

1: First, check the can to see how many square meters the mold bomb can fog. If the room has more square meters than the fogger can handle, then you may want to consider using two cans.

2: Place the can in the center of the room and clear any obstructions. Close all windows and remove or cover/remove any sensitive items (paper). Also, no humans or pets are to be in the room during fogging – even if the fogging solution is non-toxic.

3: Set the fogger off as per instructions on the can. It will give you a couple of seconds to leave the room before the fog gets released. Leave the room and close the door for 2 hours while it sanitizes and disinfects.

4: Once sufficient time has passed, enter the room, open the windows and discard the can.

How to use a ULV (Ultra Low Volume) fogger safely and correctly

1: Place the ULV fogger in the center of the room, close the windows, and clear any obstructions that may be in the way. Close all windows and remove or cover/remove any sensitive items (paper).

2: Add your mold fogging solution into the tank and set your desired settings (density of the fog and timer). Set the nozzle to release the fog at a 60-degree angle and set the density of the fog on the finest possible setting.

3: Make sure no one is in the room (pets included), and start the machine. Leave the room and close the door.

4: Switch the machine off once the fogger has finished and wait approximately 30 minutes for the fog to dissipate before opening the windows.

The best mold bomb foggers

The two best mold bomb foggers are Fog U and Biocide – both are non-toxic, highly effective against mold and their spores, and safe to use around humans and pets.

It’s best not to be in the room while fogging, even if the solution used is natural and non-toxic. Open the windows and doors after fogging has been completed, and wait a little while for the fog to dissipate.

How to choose the best mold fogging solution

If you decide to use a ULV fogger instead of a mold bomb, then you should choose which chemical to use. After all, a fogging device is only as effective as the mold fogging solution used with it.

There are many chemicals to choose from. Some are toxic, while others don’t kill mold, and instead merely encapsulate it to prevent it from spreading spores around.

Also, be very careful with what you use. For example, hydrogen peroxide is an excellent mold killer and is safe to use in liquid form. However, when turned into a mist, it can damage items and cause serious respiratory problems. So always be sure that the fogging solution you choose has been specifically formulated for use in a fogger.

But the best mold fogging solution is one that is natural, non-toxic, and that kills mold, including its spores. It’s safer for humans and pets and your home/possessions won’t get damaged or covered in a layer of poison.

The two best mold fogging solutions we could find are the EC3 Mold Solution Concentrate and Concrobium Mold Control.

Please note: Atomized particles produced by ULV foggers float in the air for long periods of time and are easily absorbed through the lungs. It’s best not to be in the room while fogging, even if the solution used is natural and non-toxic. Open the windows and doors after fogging has been completed, and wait a little while for the fog to dissipate.

EC3 Mold Solution Concentrate

Mold Bomb Foggers... Do They Really Work? - BlackMoldFix (9)

The EC3 Mold Solution Concentrate from Micro Balance is the best mold fogger solution you will find.

Not only does it consist entirely of 100% natural ingredients (citrus seed extracts, vegetable glycerine, and distilled water), but it also kills mold, spores (mycotoxins), and bacteria while deodorizing. It’s safe for use on all materials.

The key ingredient is the citrus seed extracts. Independent lab studies have shown that when applied to mold and mycotoxins in small dosages, it changes the cell structure and cell membranes. In higher dosages, it causes loss of homeostasis, membrane damage, and cell death.

The product, which is made in the USA, comes in 16 oz. bottle and makes 1 gallon after being diluted. You can put the solution into a fogger, a spray bottle, or even wash moldy clothes with it.
